Setting off fireworks in unincorporated areas of Champaign County requires a firework license. Licenses are not transferable and are not required for supervised displays by state or county fair associations.
To apply for a pyrotechnic license:

- Apply for a Fireworks License from the Champaign County Clerk’s Office at least 15 days before the date of the pyrotechnic display.
Please note the application must be accompanied by:
- a certificate of insurance from an insurance company licensed to do business in the State of Illinois, evidencing a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability coverage.
- A current and valid copy of the lead pyrotechnic operator’s license
- A written approval letter or permit issued by the chief of the fire department providing fire protection coverage to the area of the display, or his or her designee
- Full payment of the license, $25 for the license and $20 filing fee. Payment can be submitted by check (# greater than 500), money order, cashier check, or certified check.

- Apply for a Fireworks License from the Champaign County Clerk’s Office at least 15 days before the date of the pyrotechnic display.
Please note the application must be accompanied by:
- a certificate of insurance from an insurance company licensed to do business in the State of Illinois, evidencing a minimum of $300,000 per occurrence for bodily injury and property damage.
- A current and valid copy of written proof that the consumer operator handling the display has received training from a consumer fireworks training class approved by the Office of the State Fire Marshall.
- A written approval letter or permit issued by the chief of the fire department providing fire protection coverage to the area of the display, or his or her designee
- The applicant is subject to a criminal background check as a condition of issuing a permit.
- Full payment of the license, $25 for the license and $20 filing fee. Payment can be submitted by check (# greater than 500), money order, cashier check, or certified check.
